Have you ever wondered what happens to a tablet when you swallow it?

CBNS member and third-year PhD candidate Hayley Schultz gives an insight into her research:  Did you know that up to 70% of currently marketed oral medications are poorly water-soluble, which means that the majority of the drug cannot be absorbed from the gut and ends up wasted down the toilet. As a consequence, many of these drugs require another round of tablets to be taken to achieve a therapeutic effect.

Hayley’s research focuses on the improvement of absorption of such drugs. One method to improve absorption is to consume oily food with the medication. However, this is rather unpredictable and unreliable. Hayley is, therefore, developing oily formulations that mimic this food effect to achieve greater and predictable drug absorption. She has demonstrated that the formulation improves the absorption of many drugs, including a prostate cancer drug by 1000%.
